Kitsune occupy the western and northern regions of the Frostwood, ranging out from their den to seek benefactors to satisfy their nature.

Appearances

You're making your way through the forest when soft whispers and faint, lilting voices come to you from amidst the trees, jovial and playful. Not that you don't already know what this is — you're well-prepared by the point several kitsune emerge into view, their colourful clothing aflutter in the forest breeze.

Interactions

The Champion will be able to encounter kitsune in the western and northern reaches of the Frostwood, with a single forced encounter the first time they pass by the approaches to the kitsune den. Under ordinary circumstances, they will waylay the player and ask with their usual impeccable politeness for the player and their companions, if any, to be their benefactors in exchange for suitable reward. The player can choose to agree, whereupon they'll be given the option of taking charge (win scenes), or letting them lead (lose scenes). Refusing will start combat as the fluffy foxes try to "convince" the Champion otherwise.

If the champion is a kitsune themselves by virtue of having sold their soul to Keros, they will display proper reverence and be non-hostile towards the Champion. The Champion then has the option of satisfying them, or simply leaving.

If the champion is not a kitsune but has Kiyoko in the active party (not as a summon), they will show deference to High Lady Ōtomo and be non-hostile towards the Champion. As above, the Champion then has the option of satisfying them, or simply leaving.

• Voluntarily submitting to the kitsune will allow the player to choose exactly which scene ensues, win or loss, debuff the Champion with a 10% penalty to toughness, and yield a kitsune gift which will guarantee one of their drops from their loot table.
• Defeating the kitsune will give the player a random valid win scene, if the player decides to pursue them further. A 10% toughness debuff will be applied at the end of the scene.
• Losing to the kitsune will give the player a random valid loss scene. A 50% toughness debuff will be applied at the end of the scene.

Combat

Encounters in the west Frostwood are always comprised of three kitsune. Each individual is randomly drawn from the following:

• Kitsune Trickster
• Kitsune Enchantress
• Kitsune Spellblade
• Kitsune Protector

Kitsune types can repeat, which means you can have encounters comprised of three tricksters or three enchantresses.

Encounters in the northern Frostwood will always have a Kitsune Geomancer in addition to the three randomly assigned individuals.
