The Avanai Rider is a generic avanai that rides a gigantic snow roc as his mount. Like most of the residents of the [[Glacial Rift]], they hate the presence of elves and will become immediately hostile to them and anyone associated with them.

When asked why the avanai attacked them, he explains its because of the [[Boer'alvar]] - the elves and the Champion's connection to them. The elves have outstayed their welcome within rift and must leave or they will be chased out by the [[Grand Alliance]], that it is only by their mercy that they decided to allow the elves a short grace period to leave peacefully.<br><br>On why they want the elves gone: it's because two centuries ago, during the [[Godswar]], the elves blessed by [[Lumia]] saved them from the darkness from the south, but they did not return to their city like they promised. They instead established a keep towards the east of the rift, and slowly began taking more and more of the rift's resources; from melting the glaciers causing the cliffs housing roc nests to collapse, to dredging the streams for metals causing the water to be fouled and undrinkable. Time and time again they have negotiated with the elves, only for those promises to be broken. A Grand Alliance of jotuns, selkies, siorcanna, and avanai have formed to send the elves back to where they belong.

The first encounter will have 2 different variations, firstly if the Champion is an Elf and/or has [[Etheryn]] around: while travelling through the frozen waste, the sound of a bird screaming rips through the valley. What follows is the sight of a gigantic bird flying from a nearby cliff, and dives towards them at breakneck speeds. On top of gigantic bird is a bird-man, who hurls a spear towards the Champion, and if present, Etheryn. He will call out the presence of elves in the rift and exclaim that they have outstayed their welcome. The party is able evade the attack and Etheryn or the Champion attempt to explain that there is a mistake, but they are cutoff as hr exclaims that the elves have lied in their promises for two centuries, that their queen is to blame, and he will make sure to teach them to stay out of the rift - and with that a fight begins and the [[Avanai#Codex|Avanai]] codex entry will be unlocked.

Still curious for more answers, the Champion asks him what the grievances of the rift's residents have against the pale elves. He explains that two centuries ago, the elves saved them from a great darkness, and once that was over, the elves did not return to their city like they promised and established a keep in the rift. Overtime the elves took more and more of the mountain's glaciers, melted the ice, and collapsed cliffs that the rocs nested on. The elves took away the blessing of the sky, polluted glacial streams, and time and again they would negotiate and make peace with the residents of the rift, yet time and again they would break those promises. As such a grand alliance was formed by the people of the ice and storms to drive out the elves once and for all. If Etheryn is present, she will explain that the queen of Winter City has changed, and proposes that with a new leadership, new negotiations can be had. He interrupts her, answering that the queen of the elves has changed twice, yet nothing in the rift has, and asks why would another change in leadership be any different. Regardless, the Champion contemplates that this is something for Etheryn to handle, and that it might take a very long time, however, nothing can be done at the moment. Maybe if they get a better picture of what's going on, they might be able to help Etheryn with this mess. Satisfied with the answers, the Champion lets the rider and roc limp away into the snow and ice.

The Avanai Rider is a generic encounter consisting of an avanai rider that rides a gigantic snow roc as his mount. The riders are part of The Grand Alliance consisting of the native races of the Glacial Rift that have banded together to drive the Boreal Elves, and anyone associated with them, out of the rift.

Interactions

As the Champion crosses the frozen wastes, they hear the scream of a bird as the sight of a gigantic roc takes off from a nearby cliff. As it dives towards them at breakneck speed, the Champion spots a haughty-looking birdman saddled on top it. When it reaches the Champion, it begins a circling pattern above them and the rider vaults off his mount to hurl his spear towards the Champion. He proclaims that the elves have overstayed their welcome, and that they should hide back in their city where they belong. Etheryn or the Champion attempts to parley with him, only for him to cut them off as he exclaims that for two centuries they have talked with the elves, and each time the elves have reneged their previous promises. Even if the Champion and their party are truly innocent, they must blame their queens for being perfidious liars. If they do not leave, he will send them out and teach them to stay out.

As the Champion crosses the frozen wastes, they hear the scream of a bird as the sight of a gigantic roc takes off from a nearby cliff. As it dives towards them at breakneck speed, the Champion spots a haughty-looking birdman saddled on top it. When it reaches the Champion, it begins a circling pattern above them and the rider vaults off his mount to land on his feet in the snow next to them. He greets the Champion by their race, and inquires what brings them to the rift. Regardless of the answer the Champion provides (Dark Knight/anything else), he cautions them that a war within the rift will begin soon and it is not safe for outsiders, regardless of what their business in the rift is.

The Champion explains their business, including their title as the Champion of Frost. The rider immediately takes a hostile attitude towards the Champion, stating that two and a half centuries ago, a Champion of Frost came from the elf-city to the south, and nothing from the likes of them brings any good. He proclaims that any friend of the elves is no friend to the rift's people.

Encountering the Avanai Rider unlocks the Avanai codex entry, if it wasn't already.

Subsequent encounters with Avanai Riders will have 3 different variants with random chance to occur, regardless of how it begins, the end result is all the same: the avanai demand that the elves and anyone associated with them leave the rift as they are not welcome in its lands.

When asked why the avanai attacked them, he explains its because of the Boer'alvar - the elves and the Champion's connection to them. The elves have outstayed their welcome within rift and must leave or they will be chased out by the Grand Alliance, that it is only by their mercy that they decided to allow the elves a short grace period to leave peacefully.

On why they want the elves gone: it's because two centuries ago, during the Godswar, the elves blessed by Lumia saved them from the darkness from the south, but they did not return to their city like they promised. They instead established a keep towards the east of the rift, and slowly began taking more and more of the rift's resources; from melting the glaciers causing the cliffs housing roc nests to collapse, to dredging the streams for metals causing the water to be fouled and undrinkable. Time and time again they have negotiated with the elves, only for those promises to be broken. A Grand Alliance of jotuns, selkies, siorcanna, and avanai have formed to send the elves back to where they belong.
