The Undermountain Hobgoblins are groups of hobgoblins in the slums of the Undermountain. With the demonic incursion, the Minotaurs have largely withdrawn into the walls of Khor'minos, leaving the other residents of the Deeplands to fend for themselves. Imps are roaming the caves and slumlords are price-gouging them on essential goods. To try and feed themselves, the Undermountain Hobgoblins you encounter have resorted to petty banditry. They have a particular resentment towards minotaurs, including Brint or Brienne if they're in your party.

As they finish their though, a torch at the far end flares to life, revealing a ragtag group of creatures with nasty-looking bludgeons and shanks. These creatures seem to be dressed in well-patched leather and cloth, and appear to be a cross between goblins and orcs. If present in the party Brint/Brienne, will comment that they're hobgoblins, and while they seem better dressed and less starved than what farmers would hire, they're still bad news; else the Champion comments on the fact that these creatures are bad news. The lead hobgoblin explains that the Champion simply needs to pay the hobgoblin toll, or they could do things the hard way. When asked what hard way entails, the leader explains that they really don't want to fight the Champion, as people might get badly hurt, however, they will risk that over dying of starvation because of the cost of food thanks to the slum lords. Regardless if Brint/Brienne is present, the leader explains that King Kelsaz does not care for slum trash like them and without the enforcement of his price controls in the slums, they might die from the demons, but they will die from starvation. With that, they give the Champion the following options:

<blockquote>"Demons or not, the king's turning a blind eye to what the gangs are doing, using the quarantine as an excuse to kill us useless eaters by the cartload. Bastard probably thinks his glorious kingdom would be cleaner without us, so screw him and his harem of cows. Demons? I might die from demons, I will die from starvation. Those are odds I'm willing to take."</blockquote>

----

As you're exploring the Undermountain, if you have an appropriate background or high enough cunning you'll notice the shadows are just a bit too dark. The next moment, you're surrounded by scruffy looking figures wielding crude yet nasty looking improvised weapons. If Brint or Brienne are in the party they recognise them as Hobgoblins, though the ones that would be hired as farmhands were better fed and better dressed. The hobgoblins explain that with the quarantine inside the city, everyone out in the slums has been left to dodge demons and try to feed themselves. And, well, they'd really like to be able to feed themselves, and you have such nice weapons and armour...

* Pay: Know what, you can spare 300 EC for those in need. (requires 300 EC)
+
If victorious and Brint/Brienne is present, the Champion will ask them if there is somewhere they can turn the bandits in, to which they answer that with the Chargers being busy fighting demons and enforcing the quarantine, it's unlikely, additionally they don't care what happens outside the city proper; else, the Champion doubts that law enforcement would be bothered to take them in. For combat victory options, see section below.
* No: Yeah no, fuck this. You're not rewarding banditry regardless of the sob story of an excuse they've come up with.

If you Pay the hobgoblins, they thank you, and reassure you that banditry isn't their main gig. There's not enough people travelling through the Undermountain for that to be viable anyway. If present, Brint or Brienne shake their heads at your soft-heartedness — banditry in punishable by execution in Khor'minos, and you're just encouraging them by rewarding them for it. The hobgoblins let you pass without further incident, however.
+
If the Champion is defeated, with the addition of a Defeat Sex Scene, the hobgoblins will also take <b>up to 600 EC</b> and <b>one</b> of the following items if the Champion has it in their inventory (order in which is taken first):

If you choose No, you end up in battle against a group of eight Hobgoblin Thieves and Thugs. If you're victorious, Brint or Brienne if present notes there isn't anything you can do with them. As overtaxed as the city is, they won't appreciate you bringing in random thieves to put out of their misery. If you're defeated, the hobgoblins rummage through your possessions, taking some credits as well as any food they can find. They tell you to just pay next time, and decide to drive the point home with an involuntary gangbang.

Look, (brother/sister). I don't want to fight you — trust me on that, I really, really don't. People might get hurt, and pretty badly at that. But you know what I don't want more? To simply curl up in a slum gutter and wait to die of hunger because food's costing far too much thanks to the slum lords.

The Undermountain Hobgoblins are a generic group of potentially hostile Hobgoblin Thieves and Thugs that can be encountered while exploring any of the zones in the Undermountain. With the demonic incursion and the enforcement of the quarantine, the Minotaurs have largely withdrawn into the walls of Khor'minos, leaving the other residents of the Deeplands to fend for themselves. To avoid dying to starvation, they have resulted to enforcing a toll on anyone who passes through.

While they are weak on an individual basis, their numbers (6 per encounter with an even split between the two types), the addition of Raw and Bleed damage from the Thieves, and powers to knock an opponent prone from the Thugs make up for their disadvantage.

In the slums and outskirts... or at least that was the case when I left. Definitely better dressed and less starved, the ones the farmers would hire as farmhands. These are just bad news.

Appearance

These guys clearly mean business — dressed in well-patched leather and cloth vests and leggings, they remind you of a cross between goblins and orcs. The goblin traits are unmistakable — the tapered ears, the body proportions, the way they carry themselves — but they're all far too tall and well-muscled to be your stereotypical goblin. That's not to count the tusks, bovine horns and orange-brown skins, all of which are very definitely un-goblin-like.

First Encounter

While travelling down the tunnels of the Undermountain, the passage widens slightly, deepening the shadows cast by the torchposts.

The Champion's long experience in the wilds has them understand that something is deeply wrong with the shadows, considering they're a little too dark then they should be.

The Champion's honed military sense has it point out that this would be the perfect point for someone to set up an ambush.

The Champion's experience with seedy streets and lurking in the darkness has them understand that something is deeply wrong with the shadows, considering they're a little too dark then they should be.

Despite there being nothing wrong on the surface, a little voice in the back of their mind has the Champion feel like something is deeply wrong with the shadows, considering they're a little too dark then they should be.

The Champion gives a passing consideration as to why the glowing fungus that usually lines the tunnels has suddenly petered out.

Pay Has at least 300 EC Know what, you can spare 300 EC for those in need.
 • Brint/Brienne will comment on the Champion being a bit too soft-hearted
 • Arona will comment that it feels like a damn shame not to fight the cumrags
No - Yeah no, fuck this. You're not rewarding banditry regardless of the sob story of an excuse they've come up with.
 • Results in a fight

If victorious and Brint/Brienne is present, the Champion will ask them if there is somewhere they can turn the bandits in, to which they answer that with the Chargers being busy fighting demons and enforcing the quarantine, it's unlikely, additionally they don't care what happens outside the city proper; else, the Champion doubts that law enforcement would be bothered to take them in. For combat victory options, see section below.

If the Champion is defeated, with the addition of a Defeat Sex Scene, the hobgoblins will also take up to 600 EC and one of the following items if the Champion has it in their inventory (order in which is taken first):

Consumable Stolen

Subsequent Encounters

Subsequent encounters will have the Champion be accosted by yet another group of ragtag hobgoblins. One of them declares the highway toll of 300 EC, giving the Champion the same option as the first group they encountered.
