Located to the east of Hawkethorne, the Foothills is one of the three starting zones of the game. The foothills just beyond Hawkethorne contains a wide array of cliffs, ravines, the occasional caldera, hills and plateaus covered in tall grasses and colorful wildflowers. Due to the many different factors and the recent troubles plaguing the foothills, caravan trails between Hawkethorne and the eastern coast have been left abandoned. Old and abandoned watchtowers, primarily of Belharan construction, dot the lands. Amongst those recent troubles are the harpies bandits from the Windy Peaks and the orc tribe who've set up camp in the northeastern peak.
To the north, the ground turns rough, the soil thinner, the grass sparse and moss-covered boulders litter the landscape and grow in size and number. Further north, rocky formations and jagged boulders has travel become very difficult for all but the harpies infesting the lands, making any would-be army hard pressed to make any headway. Presumably due to the difficult terrain, the orc camp . While not directly accessible from the area, the Windy Peaks high above looks over the Foothills.
To the west, lies a great chasm that splits the foothills and the Deeprealms/the Kingdom of Khor'minos. The King's Gate and its minotaur stands as Khor'minos' line of defense, preventing any threat from getting in or out of their lands. Due to troubles from within, King Kelsaz has decreed the closure of the gate, and its enforcement by his personal guard; The Chargers.
History
Place X and Y information on things that occurred in this place. Foothills contains remnants of the alliance between the lupines and minotaurs during the Godswar. Note the numerous old watchtowers. TODO
Points of Interest
Zone 2 (South)
Rope Bridge
A well-maintained rope bridge spans over a great chasm, and is wide enough for single file travel. Written at the end is a sign that proclaims that King Kelsaz of Khor'minos guarantees the safety of the bridge and calls for travelers to cross without fear and to cause no trouble in their lands. It also notes that the maximum safe load of the bridge is the weight of seven adult minotaurs (approximately 1,050kgs/2,310lbs).
Chasm Bottom
Further south, where narrow carves stairs on both sides of the bridge, slowly join to the bottom of the very belly of the chasm. The underground river at the bottom has worn dirt and rock, forming a steep river canyon. While it is typical to find flora and fauna in most areas of the foothills, the caverns at the south are devoid of life.
Collapsed River Canyon Wall
Along the eastern side of the river canyon's sheer wall, lies a collapsed wall of dusty gray bricks. This pathway leads to Fort Marrok, which is only accessible during the events of Shades of the Past, with the help of River.
King's Gate

Zone 3 (North)
Old Watchtower
An ancient six-story tower surrounded by man-sized walls stands to the far north in the Foothills. The watchtower's construction predates that of Belharan influence, and while at least one hundred years old, it's in surprisingly good shape. Word from the harpies to Shar has them state that residing in the tower is a wizard who can help her become normal.
If Shar survives the events of Ugly Duckling; the unnamed wizard has long since passed, but she has decided to take up residence in the tower after finding inspiration in the Champion's words about not being stuck on the ground, due to being so high up in the tower.

Encounters
In an explorable combat area like the Foothills, majority of the map is undiscovered. The Champion will need to first Explore an area in order to find a passage to the next, however, it is not always a guarantee that they'll find the passage, and instead may find something or someone else. There exist three different types of encounters; Combat, Other, and Priority (usually pregnancy & seasonal events).
Introduced in version 0.4.23 was the refactored encounter rates and the Pick Fight option, which attempts an exploration without Other type encounters. Typically the chance for a combat encounter when moving to a new tile is at least 66%, while the Explore option gives at most a 50% combat encounter - this 50% is reduced to at most 20% if a zone has been cleared. The zone clear condition for the Foothills is; the completion of Right of Conquest.

Trivia
- Despite not being the starting area, the Foothills was the first area implemented. This was due to the amount of content that was already in-place instead of Old Forest.
