"I'm, uh... I mean, I'm a princess. Etheryn of House Ridell, Daughter of Queen Alraince. B-but please just call me Ryn. I prefer it, really. I never liked titles or formality like my sister, the queen..."

Etheryn is this that bish bosh bash

Appearance

Etheryn is a lanky, waif-thin girl of about 5'7 — a bit taller with the help of her short-heeled boots and taller still if you count the long, perky elf-ears sprouting from her head. Each is tipped with a large silver stud, just hefty enough to make them droop. She's got a very pale complexion, with skin the color of fresh milk tinted ever-so-slightly frost blue. Her ice-blonde hair is stringy and thin, cut roughly around her shoulders with her bangs braided and tied around the back of her head. Large, dark blue eyes stare at you with a mix of wonder and fear, and she chews her pink-painted lower lip as your eyes wander up and down her body.

Her figure could best be described as waifish. She has neither much in the way of chest or butt, and her hips are quite slender. She's almost boyish, but the subtle rises of her chest beneath her armor are enough to remind you that she's very much feminine, too. You'd guess that she currently has A-cup breasts, and you'd describe her ass as small and perky.

Considering where your eyes are currently straying, Ryn whimpers, but stands at attention for your inspection.

Perhaps her most eye-catching garb is a small leather choker around her neck. It's completely unadorned, but the craftsmanship is quite nice. Someone paid quite a pretty penny to get this elven beauty the nicest collar around, perfectly molded to the contours of Etheryn's slender neck. There's a small metal loop on the front, like someone could mount a tag there... or attach a chain.

The rest of her outfit consists of plain ranger's garb: leather boots and bracers and a hardened vest. A dark blue cape hangs from her shoulder, pinned by a clasp of obsidian shaped like a falcon. Her simple linen knee-skirt is covered by leather tassets, protecting most of her lower body except for a small stretch of pale skin between boot and skirt, maybe a hand's breadth wide, that's been left open. Guess the cold doesn't bother her much.

Altogether, you'd say her outfit is unremarkable.

It's what's under her clothes that's more interesting, after all. Etheryn has a small little dick, maybe four inches hard on a good day... and it's locked up inside a solid brass-and-gold chastity device. There's no obvious lock or mechanism, no way to pry and pick it free. Her little pouch of a balls hang lightly under her caged prick, looking more like a single, smooth sack than a man's sack. Her ass, at least, is fully exposed and ready to be used: there's no doubt it's been her main source of sexual release since this magic cage was placed upon her.

Interactions

First Encounter

The Champion will first meet Etheryn after defeating The Alraune at the Ruined Wayfort tied to a statue through a complex network of thin ropes. She will be shouting for help and upon hearing the Champion, she will thank the Wyld and ask that they get her down before Kasyrra comes back. Upon being freed she will move to shake the hand of the Champion however she stumbles down on one knee, dizzy from being bound upside-down. When asked about the demon, Etheryn will explain that she was picked right off of her horse and was told Karyrra was going to do all sorts of horrible things to her before she left her tied up. She promises to ell the Champion whatever they need to know when they get out of the wayfort and that she asks if she can follow the Champion around, stating that she doesn't wanna have to sneak to Castle Hawkstone by herself. The Champion may decide to bring Etheryn into their party or not.

Bringing Etheryn into the party will have her breath a heavy sigh of relief and will thank the Champion once again and state that she's with them until they get down to Hawkstone Castle. Should the Champion bring Etheryn along to face Kasyrra at the end of the Ruined Wayfort, she will remark that the Champion found her present and if they like elves since they make cozy cock-sleeves but amount to little else.

Refusing to bring Etheryn into the party will cause her to make a pathetic little whining sound in the back of her throat, she states that she's gotta get to the castle even if she's gotta walk all by herself, she takes a deep breath and starts marching back from where the Champion first came in.

Should the Champion have refused to bring Etheryn along and escort her to Castle Hawkstone, the will find her where she said she'd be. However they will find her pacing a trench in the dirt outside the castle's closed gates. Upon seeing them, she will ask where are all the guards, that there should be numerous people at the castle and that Hawkethorne is half the size she was expecting. She state that she's owed an audience, that she needs to talk to whoever is in charge because her city is in danger. When asked what's the baroness going to do about it considering an archdemon is on the loose and the spreading corruption, she stops and blinks. Her eyes become misty and her ears droop low as she wraps her arms around herself, she says that she walked all the way to the castle, attacked at every turn and that she can't go back home because her sister will do horrible things to her now since she escaped the city. She will stagger off stating that she saw a bar at Hawkethorne and she'll go find somewhere to sleep.

The Champion can find Etheryn again under the Guests section where she can be talked to to try and get her to open up. Approaching Etheryn and taking a seat next to her will make her recoil, like a shy puppy as if she's afraid they're going to go to her and hit her. When asked about Winter City, she'll go on to explain that its the home of her people, the Boreal Elves and that its a great city. When asked why she left, she mentions that there's something wrong in the city, that the Queen locked herself away in her chambers, that the guards are changing as they lash out at anyone how gets near the palace and that no one would listen to her, blind to the change or that they simply didn't care. She formally introduces herself as a princess of House Ridell although she prefers to be called Ryn as she never like titles or formalities like her sister, Queen Alissa. She left to find help from the baroness because Winter City and the Frost Marches have a very old treaty of alliance guaranteeing mutual aid in times of crisis. She was also afraid that her sister's guards were really going to hurt her and whoever the baron was at Hawkstone had an obligation to protect her. Before Etheryn can say anything else, a huge bird bursts in and before the Champion can react, Etheryn runs towards the bird with open arms. With the first big genuine smile the Champion has seen on Etheryn, she introduces her best friend Harrick who she let loose when she ran from the city, she didn't want her sister to hurt him because she left. She laughs, giddy with excitement, and vigorously brushes the hawk's feathers.

At The Frost Hound

If the Champion had not brought her into their party and has talked to Etheryn after she reunites with Harrick, Etheryn can be talked to at The Frost Hound, where she will have the following options:

  • Appearance
  • Talk - See if you can pry a few words out of the introverted elf.

Harrick

"T-this is my bird, Harrick," Ryn says, turning to you with the first big, genuine smile you've ever seen from her. "I let him loose when I ran from the city... I didn't want my sister to hurt him because I left. He's been my best friend since I was a baby... and now he's here! He followed me!"

Harrick is Etheryn's War-hawk and best friend who accompanies her and can be summoned by her during combat. If the Champion did not recruit Etheryn when they freed her at the Ruined Wayfort, Harrick will burst into The Frost Hound when talking with Etheryn after her "visit" to Castle Hawkstone.

Companionship

Confession

Confidence

Due to how she was treated by her sister, Etheryn is quite shy, reserved and fearful, lacking confidence in herself unlike other companions like Brint or Cait. However with her adventures with the Champion, her confidence can be increased or decreased which will effect how she reacts to things involving her.

Other Interactions

Companions can accompany the Champion in their adventures, providing not only combat assistance but offering their opinions and talents to aid the Champion. The following items are the interactions of Berwyn with other characters, situations and events while accompanying the Champion or comments of other characters on Etheryn. Note that Bad End interactions are not included in this list.

Scene From To Requirements Description Writer
Etheryn Quintillus The Champion Recruited Etheryn Your purple elf companion and Quintillus are getting along, you take it?

"Well enough."

Quin sets one hand on his other arm's elbow, resting his cheek against his fist and peering off over at Etheryn. "Well enough, considering I wouldn't mind making that boreal princess into a prim, proper Taelian wife."

Crossing your arms, you hastily coax the bunny into flashing you his playful smirk; the taeleer man lets his hand drop, opening it just enough for a pink fire to spark up in his grasp.

"Don't worry, I'm joking; as cute as she is, Etheryn isn't really my type. It's about the challenge when you find a good flame. The classic give-and-take romance is the only kind I want. Though, I suppose we get along well enough; her bird is rather magnificent and her ability with a bow is impressive. From a martial standpoint, she impresses me enough to make that cute ass of hers good company."
BubbleLord
Etheryn Kiyoko The Champion Recruited Etheryn "A child as her people reckon time, raised in tragedy and thrust into responsibility far greater than what her upbringing trained her to handle. No doubt she imagined her sister would rule for all her life, and never had the opportunity nor the motivation to learn how to rule. That she has lasted this long, at least, suggests that she has the potential to overcome the odds that are against her, and I will be frank: they are not good. Her life so far sounds like the opening chapters of a classical tragedy. Then again, if there were a way to overcome the odds, it would be with you." The Observer
Etheryn Brienne The Champion Recruited Etheryn (If Confidence < 50: "I think she's a little afraid of me," Brienne says, grimacing. "Just a little too eager to hop to doing whatever I want, you know? Like it's ingrained in her. Hard to imagine what she's been through. Her bird is nice and friendly all of a sudden, though. Hopefully he can see where I'm coming from, at least.")

(If Confidence >= 50: "She's lively and friendly," Brienne says with a fond smile. "You can really tell you've rubbed off on her... she speaks like you sometimes, if you haven't noticed. It's adorable to see.")

"She's amazing with a bow," you say, and Brienne nods along with you.

"No doubt about that. She must have worked hard to reach that level of performance," she says. "I know how much effort it takes to get those kinds of results."

Etheryn Brint The Champion Recruited Etheryn "What do you make of Etheryn?" you ask.

(If Etheryn Brint Threesome: "Sounds real cute when she's cumming," Brint says with a grin.(If Confidence <50: "The shyness just makes it cuter.")(If Confidence >= 50: "She can get loud.")|

(If Confidence <50: "Hard to say," Brint shrugs. "She doesn't talk much, but she looks cute and seems fine. Poor girl just needs some confidence, I think.")(If Confidence <75: "She's coming out of her shell a bit more these days," Brint says, smiling at you. "Guessing that's your doing, Champion. Good on you. It's fun watching her spread her wings a little. She's a cutie.")(If Confidence >=75: "I like her," Brint says. "Nice and cute, and these days she's a lot more sociable. Handy in a fight, too, with that archery of hers.")

"I don't know how much her hawk loves me, though," he adds after a moment.
Wsan
Etheryn Cait The Champion Recruited Etheryn (If Etheryn Confessed: "Poor Etheryn," Cait sighs, (If at Camp: glancing over to where the elven wait is sitting by the fire|leaning back in her seat). "I can't imagine my sister doing something so terrible to me... or living like that, for that matter. Mallach preserve, if I went a week without being able to cum I'd probably claw my own tits off trying; I can't imagine going years."

Well, it seems like her sister at least allowed Ryn to cum from her ass.

"How magnanimous of her! If we ever come to the court of this Queen Alissa, you better stop me or I'm gonna put her over my knee."

You're sure there'll be a line. "But what about Ryn herself?"

Cait thinks a moment, smiling. "I think she's a sweet thing. A little too timid for my tastes, but I'd be happy to help try and bring her out of her shell. When I look at her, though, I feel like I want to give her a hug more than I want to give her a ride, you know? She's like a scared puppy and I just want to hold her close and tell her it'll be alright."|

"Etheryn? Hmm, I don't really know her very well yet, but she seems... tense. Scared, too, like a wounded animal looking over her shoulder every few seconds. She practically jumps at her own shadow."

"Any idea why?"

Cait shrugs, (If at Camp: glancing over to where the elven wait is sitting by the fire|leaning back in her seat)."Something happened to her back in her home. Something terrible enough to make her flee south, further than almost any of her kin have been in a generation. If you ask me... and you are... I'd think it was Kasyrra's influence. That's the direction she flew off, after all, and she's had plenty of time to start wreaking havoc."

That doesn't sound good.

Village Brint The Champion Has not talked to Brint about Village previously

Met Etheryn
He stops, considering for a moment.

"Does Hawkethorne not have a King?"

You tell him it has a baroness. A woman named Revarra.

He looks momentarily surprised, then nods.

"So a woman leader like that elf had, then. Is this common?"

You tell him you don't know yourself. Hawkethorne and Khor'Minos are just two places in the world, after all. The rules are different everywhere.

Hazards? Ninian Harrick Combat Victory Harrick squawks defensively, furrowing his brows aggressively. Ninian scowls at the warhawk and claps a fist into his palm. "Don't think you scare me! I'm bigger than you!"

Etheryn hushes Harrick and turns, wrangling the bird and disarming the pair before either Harrick or Ninian makes the pixie regret picking a fight.

Storehouse Etheryn The Champion Entering the storehouse at the Kitsune Den for the first time "H-hey!" Etheryn whispers into your ear. "I recognise some of these! And the markings on the crates... these definitely came from the Winter City! And these... you can find them at the market in the palace square...

"Have these people been trading with us all this time and we just didn't know it?"

You can see why Ryn might be a little concerned. It's a good thing that the kitsune are generally benevolent if mischievous, because having soul-sucking masters of disguise walking freely into your settlements could be quite alarming if they were minded to creating actual trouble.

"Don't put it like that!"

It is the truth, though, isn't it?
The Observer
Trade Etheryn The Champion / Ryn rubs her temples. "I still can't believe it. Someone would have noticed fox-people hawking wares in the market. Someone would have put two and two together sooner or later. If you can get in and out of the Winter City without anyone noticing, and for months if not years on end to boot, something's seriously wrong — not that Alissa made the situation any better. The implications for our security are staggering."

You can see how soul-sucking vampires freely mixing amongst the elves with no one being the wiser might cause some concern, yes.

Camp Etheryn The Champion Random chance when setting up camp in the Old Forest Etheryn looks at the ruins around her and sighs sadly. "The pale elves used to be so much more... then the Godswar happened. That, along with the schism between the official worship of the Seven and the druids who still followed the Old Wyld, ended us as a major power in the Frost Marches. Now someone else will rise to fill the void left by our waning."

(if Dark Knight:Tough luck. All good things must come to an end, such is the way of the world — and the pale elves' time is over.|You move to comfort Etheryn, but she shakes her head and wordlessly steps away. She probably needs a minute or two of alone time.)

/ What else does she do, then?

"Spotting, for one. Those lovely elves from the city of ice to the north send patrols into this forest all the time. They're all so big and brash and bold; giantesses, every single one of them. Getting them off their wargs and convincing them to take on the mantle of benefactor is child's play," she blinks, every word thus far full of fond appreciation. "They're such easy, willing meals."

At that, Ryn crosses her arms and pouts. "Hey!"

Hmm? Is it not true?" Slinking well into Ryn's personal space, Kura fixes her gaze into Ryn's. "The warrior women of your kind have robust bodies and appetites for desire... it is a compliment, not a jibe. Unless there's some deeper meaning I have yet to perceive? You look like you'd be a tasty little morsel, not that I would take anything that's not willingly given."

Frostwood Kitsune First Encounter Etheryn The Champion / "I... " Ryn appears equal parts thoughtful and intimidated as she peers into the darkness. "Back in the day, there were reports of things like this happening. Patrols plunged into sudden darkness, surrounded by laughter. And then... "

And then what? That information could certainly come in useful right now.

She shakes her head. "I'm sorry. Most of them aren't too clear on what happened in between then and being found by other patrols. So many details were missing, I was sure it was just a scary story Alissa made up to keep me awake at night."

Use of Ice Wine Etheryn The Champion / You pull the glass stopper out of the decanter, feeling the wine's faint chill reach your fingers through the thick material. Even though it seems a bit of a shame to guzzle down this fine wine, you quaff the bottle's contents, feeling its trademark soothing coolness spread throughout your body.

You nod.

"This may be simple fare, really, but it tastes much better than anything the Winter City could bring to bear. I'm glad to be out here with you."

Orc Dress Etheryn Nelia Turning in the Winterstem to Nelia during Blacksmith's New Clothes "Oooh, it's pretty," Ryn says with a soft sigh, running her fingers against the linen. "It's not too different from the clothes I'd 'borrow' when I snuck down into the town — simple enough that I wouldn't draw undue attention when in the streets, but fine enough that I wouldn't get into certain kinds of trouble."

"Thank you." Nelia dips her head. "You're certainly a nice girl with good discernment."

"And you're certainly an excellent seamstress."

"Shucks, now you're making a mother like me blush. Come on, then, let me show you something else that'll take your breath away." She turns back towards the racks and returns with two more pieces, setting them on the counter before you. "Now these are some mighty fine girls, I'd say!"
The Observer
Frostwood Etheryn The Champion A Specific Tile in Frostwood "Prime winterstem country," Etheryn muses as you pass along the trail. "Alissa would send servants out to this stand of the woods to gather as much as they could for her parties. It didn't occur to her the more they picked, the less there'd be the next time... it got so bad that they had to hunt right on the edge of the wetlands for it." The Observer
"Some of the druids used to uh, bury their dead here," Etheryn points out, stepping from one root to the next. "They'd throw the bodies into the mud pits and let them be taken by the earth. Not surprising, considering their beliefs."
Etheryn shudders at the sight. What's wrong?

"Mining was the most thankless job in the distant past; this was where we sent the most heinous criminals who wouldn't take the cup of the queen's mercy, or didn't deserve it. Many died buried under rubble, suffocated by toxic vapour, or slain by strange creatures under the earth... amongst other things, precious crystals were unearthed from this mine on my great-great-grandmother's orders, about a thousand years ago. To this day, nobody knows what they were used for, not even the royal family.

"One... one of the few memories I still have of my father before he died in that hunt was him bringing me here and telling me that I shouldn't pry into the old queen's affairs too deeply, for my own safety. It nearly cost my mother her life... not that it mattered in the end, did it?"

You give Ryn a pat on the back and mumble several reassuring words. Looks like it's no longer in operation, though.

A nod. "During my grandmother's reign a little before the Godswar, she ordered the mines closed. Sifting the waterways coming into the Great Lakes for ore washed out of the glacial mountains was a more efficient and humane way of meeting the Winter City's needs. She was very proud of her achievement in developing the tools and techniques involved, Father told me."
"This... is what remains of the royal arbor, Champion. The razorcups have long since been choked out since my grandmother's time, as were most other delicate plants... but the blood iris thrives. Mother's reign was peaceful, and she had no reason to offer the cup to anyone; she decommissioned the arbor before Alissa and I were born. Alissa... prefers to do other things to those who cross her, rather than offer them an easy death."
"It's a fairly recent logging site," Ryn explains when she notices you examining one of the pines. "Cut, replant, then sometimes they burn the underbrush, too."

They burn the underbrush?

Ryn nods. "Some species of pines won't sprout unless there's been a fire to sear their cones and heat the soil. You'd imagine otherwise given the cold, but forest fires aren't exactly uncommon in these woods. All it takes is a stray lightning strike and the dry air does the rest. That's why we have to cut sometimes, prevent them from getting out of control."

You look at the ancient pine, mull over Ryn's words, then remember what "recent" must mean when one considers how the boar'alvar reckon time.
"Old druidic defenses for their enclaves," Ryn points out as she hacks a way through the thorns for you. "We don't know how many followers of the Old Wyld are still hiding out in the woods, but their abandoned encampments and abodes have been constant sources of trouble for the last couple of centuries. When they move on and leave the defenses to their own devices, they have a habit of spreading out of control. Of course, that suits the old druidic circles just fine, but it's another matter for us."
"The Winter City draws much of its water from these glacial lakes," Ryn mentions as you pass by. "It's clean, and comes at a temperature that's much suited to our purposes."

"I don't know what to make of this."

Whatever does she mean, 'she doesn't know what to make of this'? Didn't spend twenty years straight trying to pick the lock on her cage?

"This thing's centuries old, and it looks like it's of minotaur make. Even if it weren't, I'd need to examine it in more detail. Give me, say, a day, and I might be able to see what I can do about it."

A day? You don't have that long when ghosts are literally coming out of the walls at you!

"Now, I weren't there, but Granny were, an' she says ya lot decided to withdraw to yer glitzy ice city an' leave this neck o' th' woods. No one forced ya to write it off like ya did. Ain't able to walk in th' trees without trippin' over some ruin or th' other o' yer people."

Ryn looks at the foreign spread laid out in front of her and sighs. "When my father was still alive, Alissa loved having all kinds of feasts. Even when she became queen after my dad died as king dowager, she tried to hold them as much as she could. I... I was allowed to attend, after a fashion, but I never quite felt at home in the drunken gorging and winterstem smoke that would fill the hall. Champion... you don't mind if I stay, do you?"

Ryn has been silent throughout the whole meal, eyes turned downward towards her food. She doesn't say anything, but gives Kinu a grateful nod when the latter moves to refill her soup bowl. There's a lot going up in Ryn's head, you'd imagine, and she'll probably talk about it when the time's right. No point trying to force it out of her now.

"Strange blue flames leading those on patrol astray, laughter in the trees, that sort of thing. Alissa always dismissed such talk as nonsense — for a full-fledged warrioress of the boer'alvar to be taken in by the glamours of fox-eared midgets, even the notion was preposterous. It didn't change the fact that for so many years, there was no end of women willing to volunteer for duty in this neck of the woods."

Sounds like her sister really should have been open to more possibilities instead of dismissing them outright. Now that Ryn's seen a lot more of the world outside of the Winter City, you're sure her perspective on things has changed.

"One of my tutors mentioned that reality often was allowed to be more bizarre than fiction, because fiction had to be believable while reality did not. I didn't understand it at the time, but I'm beginning to understand what he meant by it."

They'll just hide under the inclined palisades and return fire while they send some of their number up to trap us here. I've only one pair of hands — it would take far too long. It would work if we had a whole squad of bowmen to pin them down while another advanced upon their position, but as a long group we don't really have a chance at utilising that kind of tactic."

Would they please be dears and nip out to Ivris' for more while you make this place a little more accommodating?

Ryn looks a little puzzled at that. "I'm not sure what you mean, Champion. Everything looks fine to — oof!"

Wearing her best cheery smile, Cait elbows Ryn again for good measure, then firmly grabs the elf by the arm and starts dragging her out. "Oh, of course, Champion. It would certainly be a shame if we ran out of essential oils during our meditations and had to go get more. Would certainly spoil the mood."

"Oh! Right!" Ryn brightens, then looks a little sheepish. "Gods, now I'm feeling guilty — I shouldn't have gotten so excited that I forgot all about him."

Well, the next few days will be a great chance for her to reflect on and ask forgiveness for her failings.

Color rises to Ryn's cheeks. "All right, you've made your point. Give me a moment — I'll set him up on a pew or something and let Sanders know how he should be cared for."

"This..."

This is some kind of nature magic, is it?

"You guess correctly. I wasn't sure before, but..." Etheryn looks a little uncertain for a moment, then steels herself. "Now I'm certain of it. The Old Forest holds much power for those who still follow the old wyld; it's not impossible that a ward of such strength could not just be created, but also maintained. It relies on misdirection rather than force to lead intruders astray; if we keep ourselves together, I'm sure we could breach the ward."

That's easier said than done, though.

Asking Garret about Elf during Dog Days Etheryn The Champion / You look askance at Etheryn, who gives you a hesitant nod. "It's true. Officially, women are supposed to be respected just that tiny bit more in the Winter City, but reality differs quite harshly from the official truth. I'm living proof of that."

All right. Giving the skittish Etheryn a comforting pat on the shoulder, you turn back to Garret and his tale.

Garret
/ Seeing you examine the lock, Etheryn steps up and gives you a small, timid tap on the shoulder. "I can open the lock if you'd like. It shouldn't be too hard."

You turn to her and smile. Why, you were just thinking the same thing.

You step aside to give Etheryn some space, and she gets to work. Drawing out a slim pouch from her possessions, the elf busies herself with a number of slender and flexible thieves' tools, studying each one in turn while glancing at the lock on the cage. At last, she settles on two of their number, a strip of wire with several protrusions on its tip, and slides both into the lock.

"Mind moving back?"

Garret shrugs and ambles over to the other side of the cage. "Sure. Don't let me get in your way."

Etheryn fiddles with the lock, beads of sweat forming on her forehead. There's a faint scraping noise from within the mechanism; she purses her lips, adds a little oil to the silvered lockpick, then tries again. This time the tumblers shift a little, and she steadily applies more pressure to the thieves' tool, mumbling under her breath. For a moment, you wonder if the tool's going to snap in the lock — it looks so delicate — but at last the tumblers click, and the lock pops open.

"All done!"

Garret springs to his feet, knocking over his doggy dish and trampling it underfoot in his haste to be out of his prison; the barred door clangs loudly as he throws it open and lets out a heaving sigh.

"Ye gods, that was better out than in! And good thing you finished the job quickly, too!"

"Oh? Were you in a hurry?"

Garret's face turns grim, and he points over Etheryn's shoulder at the hall's entrance doorway. "Yeah. We've got company."
Watch Hethia at the river during Dog Days Etheryn The Champion / A faint whimper at your side draws your attention, and you half-turn to find Etheryn cringing behind an old, moldy tree stump. Shuffling over to the elf, you give her a reassuring pat on the shoulder, and she calms down a little.

"Sorry. I don't know what came over me. Or I do, but..."

So long as she doesn't give the lot of you away...

"I-I just..." Etheryn takes a deep breath, and clenches her fists so hard her knuckles whiten. "Right. She reminded me of Alissa. Not that much, but enough to trigger old... um, reflexes."

You understand. It may be that you'll have to face the druidess in combat — if it does come to that, will she be able to rally herself?

"Do I have a choice?"

No.

"Then I must." Etheryn doesn't sound too convinced of her own words, but it's probably counterproductive to bruise her ego right now.

"That's a whitewood bow," Etheryn notes. "Impressive."

You can tell the quality of its make, you suppose, but is there anything special about it? It's rare, you take it?

"The only other one I've seen belonged to my mother. It was a gift from the druids of the Old Wyld to my great-grandmother, back before the Godswar. Most others have been lost or otherwise gone missing..."

Not a big surprise that a druidess would have it, then. Where are the bowstring and arrows?

"It produces them on its own. You'll see if it ever gets turned on us."

She doesn't relish the prospect, does she?

"No."

You give Etheryn another pat on the shoulder, but she doesn't look very reassured.

Is there some kind of "only the rightful wielder can use this weapon" clause attached to it or something?

"Well, no..."

Then what's the problem? Sure it's got plenty of cultural significance, but it's clear the druidess was abusing it to terrorize Westbank. That's a pretty good argument for confiscating it, yes?

Etheryn still doesn't look too happy about the prospect, but doesn't voice any more objections. That suits you just fine.
Sanders Westbank Etheryn Brother Sanders Bringing Brother Sanders to parley with Hethia during Dog Days "I-I'm not completely sure about that," Etheryn says, most uncharacteristically butting into your conversation. "Pardon me, but it may make things worse..."

Sanders raises an eyebrow. "How so, child?"

"You serve the Living Gods; Velun to be precise. This druidess almost certainly serves the Old Wyld. When the Royal Family converted to worship of the Living Gods after the Godswar, most of pale elf society followed in their stead — the few who still remained faithful to the Old Wyld and the symbol of the Wyld Tree left the Winter City of their own accord...

"Needless to say, there was, and still is, resentment from those who still practice the old faith."

Sanders nods. "I'll have to keep that in mind, child, but it won't prevent me from trying."

"If you're so determined..." Etheryn looks like she has more to say, but can't work up the nerve to voice it.
Talking to Garth about Troubles prior to Dog Days Garth The Champion Has at least met Etheryn who's sitting at one of the nearby tables). She quickly looks away, clearly uncomfortable with the situation.

Garth nods. "Pretty much, I'd say. Now, the lads at Westbank aren't idiots — they don't do dumb shit like clear-cutting the Old Forest. At the very least, it makes sense for them to make sure they have a job tomorrow. They try to take the old trees, the thickest clusters, thin the place out a bit so when the forest fires come in the summer they're not as terrible as they could have been. Old man Sanders follows Velun, so he comes and does an inspection every other season, makes some suggestions as to treating the forest right, gives the camp his blessing. The pale elf lady, though, she didn't recognize the Living Gods."

"That's... that sounds right," Etheryn pipes up(Ryn not in party: from her table). She's clearly hesitant, but takes a moment to summon up the courage to speak. "When the royal family officially converted after the Godsway, my grandmother made worship of Lumia and the other Living Gods our state religion. Some people... well, there was a break between most of us, and the handful who still held faith in the animistic practices of the old wyld. In protest, they packed up and left the Winter City, turning their backs on those they considered apostates."

So, this lady who came complaining to the camp was probably one of their number?

Etheryn shifts uncomfortably, turning her gaze away. "That's likely to be the case. They're rather hard-line about their worship of the old wyld — they'd have to be, to throw away everything for their faith, and I can't imagine they've grown more lax over the last couple of centuries in self-exile. Appealing to them in Velun's name isn't going to do much for anyone's case — just the opposite, in fact."

You eye her up and down. "You're familiar with it?"

"You could say that." Given Ryn's tone of voice, you're not inclined to press any further, but she continues of her own accord. "I never saw it for myself, but Grandmother was said to favour it as a method of execution. The remaining druids who held onto their faith after she declared the Seven as the pale elves' new religion, yet wouldn't exile themselves... according to the stories, they had one last night of devout merriment and then committed suicide by imbibing blood iris.

"My sister favoured my grandmother's methods, at least in that regard — and those I saw enough of. A merciful, painless death, Alissa called it, and much less messy than calling for the headsman."

Well, you don't intend on killing the orcs, only taking them out of commission for long enough that Arona doesn't meet with any unexpected surprises.

Ryn looks askance, but nods.

Ryn just sits quietly on the cart, arms folded, slowly shaking her head as an all-too-familiar scene plays out once more. Several of the orc warriors try to vomit, to purge themselves of the poison they suspect they've ingested, but it's far too late for them at this point. Something long-absent in the faces of the lodge slaves glimmers once more in their gazes, hope — and it's a brave, mangy-looking catfolk who grabs a mace off an unconscious warrior and finishes the job the poison started.

There's not a moment to lose. Armed with a surfeit of some of the finest weapons to be had in the orc camp, the slaves push past you on their way out, making a beeline for the pens, clearly intent on acquiring reinforcements for themselves. Ryn sighs, clearly upset by all this. "Looks like it's over."
